On the heels of last night’s Victoria Secret’s annual fashion show, let’s take a look at a few in the modeling space that have carved mini-empires.

In the world of tycoon models, no list is complete without mentioning of Tyra Banks. Beginning as a model in 11th grade, Tyra moved into the TV world as a guest star alongside Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. By 2003, Banks produced and hosted America’s Next Top Model, which to date has aired 213 episodes, and led to her Emmy-award-winning post as host of daytime talk show The Tyra Banks Show. In 2005, Bank started the TZONE Foundation, an organization that started as a camp to invigorate leadership skills in young people. Between milestones, Banks has teamed up with brands like Reebok, Lays, and CoverGirl.
As far as networks go, lifestyle cable giant Bravo has revitalized the careers of several former models across its programming. Most notably, Heidi Klum’s rating juggernaut Project Runway not only aided Bravo’s rise in the cable world, but also proved the fresh-faced German to be a multifaceted tour-de-force, spinning her Emmy-nominated role on Runway into other hosting gigs and deals with Volkswagen, Guitar Hero, New Balance, Light & Fit Yogurt, and Mattel (and the face of McDonald’s in Germany too). Similarly, Bravo has jump-started careers for Tyson Beckford and Niki Taylor (Make Me A Supermodel), Iman (The Fashion Show), Padma Lakshmi (Top Chef), and Kelly Choi (Top Chef: Masters Season 1).
Marisa Miller is another former Victoria’s Secret Angel who has leveraged her modeling career well. She currently has partnerships with Harley Davidson (Miller is an avid rider), Captain Morgan, the American Cancer Society and her own line of stand up paddleboards. Miller, is also one of the legendary SI Swimsuit Issue covergirls; alongside Banks, Klum, Christie Brinkley and Brooklyn Decker. Earlier this year, we wrote about the impact of the SI cover as it has served as a starting point for some of the most recognizable faces in the world.
And last but absolutely not least is Kathy Ireland, who turned a best-selling line of socks at K-Mart in 1993 into a home-furnishing global enterprise that nets over $1.4 billion annually.
