Bubba Watson and @MOTOACTV – A Winning Combination

There is nothing better in work than when planning comes through to the optimum result…..and last night, it did! We helped Motorola launch their new golf GPS device @Motoactv just weeks ago using @BubbaWatson as the global golf ambassador. And as the world now knows, he is the new 2012 Masters Champion. He used the @Motoactv device at Augusta during Monday’s practice round to help him with his yardages on each shot. His success on the Tour and his recent Motorola partnership led Forbes to knight him "Golf's Next Marketing Star."

Congratulations Bubba. Incredible result.

PS – His @bubbawatson handle has increased 200,000 followers in the past 72 hours!

4 Tips for using Celebrity Spokespeople on Twitter

By Paige Keffer  (see all team member profiles here)

1. Followers Aren’t Everything - Of course, one of the major factors in considering a spokesperson for a Twitter-centric program is the number of followers. However, if a celebrity has 800,000 followers – but has tweeted three times in the past four months – does that really benefit the brand? One exception may be Beyoncé, who amassed an impressive 3.5 million followers and until yesterday – hadn’t ever tweeted. When the celeb does tweet, you can measure traction with followers via RTs and responses. If you're lucky (or the tweet is that good), media will pick up the tweet which will get you extra mainstream media impressions.

2. Keep it Authentic The goal of any good public relations program is to get the brand message across in an organic and authentic way. The same principle applies to tweets. If someone never tweets with exclamation points – why would they ever tweet “I LOVE XYZ PRODUCT!” Even though FCC regulations require advertising and sponsorship tweets to be called out if celebrities have been compensated, you can ensure that the tweet is in their voice. Twitter is fun and informal, keep it that way.

3. Timing is Everything Twitter is constantly abuzz with breaking news, organized chats and general conversation. As a brand, you want the celebrity tweet to  disseminate when your audience is plugged in and “listening.” For example, earlier this week Rory McIlroy announced (via Twitter!) a new website and partnership with UNICEF. Perfect timing as the Masters frenzy was just picking up and the golf hashtag started moving.

4. Consider a Creative Way to Use Handle Twitter assets don’t have to stay on social media. We were recently involved with a project where we advised the brand team to include the celebrity’s Twitter handle on product packaging. Normally, it would just be a name, but with a Twitter handle, you encourage the consumer to at the very least get on and check it out. Any time you can drive action by the consumer – take advantage. Plus, it gives the PR firm another hook when pitching the story i.e. "Hey, brands are now using social media on their packaging, too"

Our Hodgepodge Most Valuable Tweeters of the Week

What do Shaft, a sports analyst, a Blackberry coma, and a pop icon all have in common? They’re all responsible for this week’s Hodgepodge Most Valubale Tweets of the Week.

Samuel L Jackson – The omnipresent actor finally put his @SamuelLJackson handle to use during a segment on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, when he teamed up with the social-media-obsessed talk show host to push out his first 140-character-or-fewer message to the world. What did he have to say? “Can-a muh f**kasay f** on here.”  In less than a week of Tweeting, Jackson has lured over 145,000 followers with only thirty-five Tweets, which include ruminations like: “Don't you hate it when you're giving an inspirational speech and get eaten by a shark mid-sentence?” and “ I've had it with these mothaf****** Beliebers on these mothaf****** trending topics.” Mr. Jackson, welcome.

Peter King - With 600k+ followers, King’s smart insights on the NFL, both on and off the field, keep his numbers rising in the midst of America’s favorite sports season. From tweets about his  legendary Monday Morning Quarterback column in SI to podcasts with some of the league’s best players and brightest minds, King deserves a nod this week.

John Paczkowski  - Blackberry experienced a network-wide outage yesterday, which sparked a pile of frustrated Tweets and constituted for over $100 million of lost revenue. Tech blogger John Paczkowski weighed in with our favorite: “What did one BlackBerry say to the other BlackBerry? ... Nothing.”

Britney Spears – Britney (@britneyspears 10.1MM+ followers) reached a new level of stardom this week, when she reached 10MM+ followers, an echelon only shared with five others: Lady Gaga (@ladygaga 14MM+ followers; @justinbeiber 13.3MM+ followers; @katyperry 10.7MM+ followers; @barakobama 10.5MM+ followers); and @KimKardashian (10.3MM+ followers). What sticks out about this list? Four out of six of the top Tweets are musicians.

Our Hodge-Podge Most Valuable Tweeters of the Week

With a crazy night in baseball, an appeal to help Haiti, a space giant taking on the Twitterverse, a fistfight spurned from a Twitter fight, and a few others, this week’s Twitter all stars include:

Jason Stark – ESPN baseball commentator who documented the sport’s crazy Wednesday night to his 103,000+ followers live.

Alyssa Milano – Tweeted to her 1.7MM on behalf of “Your Dollar, Our Future,” a campaign to rebuild schools destroyed by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Innocent Drinks - The UK brand best known for its fruit smoothies sought to create buzz around its recently launched vegetable pots with a Twitter-based campaign. For four weeks, the more tweets Innocent gets with the hashtag #tweetandeat, the bigger the discount grows. Consumers can request a direct message so that they know when the next coupon level has been reached, and can download and print coupons at their website.

NASA – The space giant will be inviting 150 of its 1.4MM followers to attend the Curiosity Mars Rover launch at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  Registration begins at noon on October 5th, and ends October 7th.  Updates will be released with the hashtag #NASAtweetup

Admiral Mike Mullen – The Chairman of the Join Chiefs of Staff tweeted a farewell to his 55,000+ followers.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News: Two Philadelphia Eagles beat reporters’ Twitter feud escalated into a full blown fist fight at the team’s training facility this past Wednesday.  Radio personality, Howard Eskin,  recounted the event to his own 12,000+ followers: "Great media fight 2day at eagles complex. Les bowen connects 2 the head of jeff McLane. Jeff tweeted he was an old tired reporter. CORRECT."

First Call Follows….

We use Twitter daily in our business - for news, for relationships, launching programs and for simply following breaking news. So, instead of waiting for the Follow Friday (#FF) messages, we are going to consistently share whom our team follows. So expect more blog postings like this - names, handle and descriptions why. Here are my first five.

Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) – He is a great follow (and maybe the best) if you are interested in sports business. Great access and insight. We first worked together on a Michael Vick story as he was coming out of Virginia Tech and about to be drafted in the NFL (I was doing publicity work for celebrities then). It’s scary – but sometimes we write tweets that are almost exact in content and tone within seconds of each other. On twitter, he also does instant polling, headline writing contests & writes cleverly about food (check out yesterday re:  Arby's).

Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) – Really enjoy reading Brian, in the paper and via twitter. Clever words and thoughtful posts. A relevant read for anyone that breathes TV, digital media, the news and the New York Times. Brian is a great place to start reading when interested in the changing dynamic of CNN, Fox News and cable television.

June Ambrose (@juneambrose) – As you can tell from the names on this blog, our work is incredibly diverse. June is a must read for colleagues in the design + style space. She’s the author of “Effortless Style”, has participated in several reality shows and styles Celebrity A Listers at Awards Shows, commercials and music video shoots. I always enjoy her fresh perspective and knowledge of fashion trends.

Nikki Finke (@nikkifinke) – She is more connected in Hollywood than most actors and directors. She’ll give you an insiders view (not 100% accurate all the time) and look deep inside the red velvet ropes. If your work revolves around TV pilots, award shows, casting, hiring/firing of Los Angeles and just general showbiz, than Nikki should be at the top of your list. (Interesting side note - she follows no one.)

Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) – I read the King of Action Sports for a few reasons. He is relevant to our business and have worked with Tony before on projects, like a Degree for Men program last year. But I also like the way  he uses photos on twitter and interacts with his followers. His #treasurehunts are pure fan engagement.

Final Business Thoughts from NBA Championship and Dallas Mavericks Win

Here's my Top 10 takeaways, Twitter-style,  from last night's Dallas Mavericks win over the Miami Heat.

1 – Smart business people know when to stay quiet and listen. Here’s to you Mark Cuban (@mcuban)

2 – On the field performance does not always equate to off-the-field marketability (see: Dirk, Pete Sampras, Tim Duncan)

3 – Pre-mature celebration rubs fans/consumers the wrong way (Twitter is going to crush the Big3 today)

4 – In today’s world, legacies are (unfairly) defined at point-in-times. Lebron has work ahead of him

5 Gatorade really helped Kevin Durant’s marketability with continuous ads during the playoffs

6 – Insurance agencies went head-to-head during the Championship. Lebron/State Farm & Dennis Haysbert/Allstate

7 – Mark Cuban could hit the speaking circuit hard if he had the desire to do so

8 – If the Mavericks didn’t play in American Airlines Center, Lufthansa could do a great promotion with them and Dirk

9 – I do think Dwayne Wade’s marketability increased this post-season. He is a top-five player and should be marketed as such

10 – If I was Dick’s Sporting Goods, I would change the name of all Dallas locations to Dirk’s (and create a charitable play with his charity of choice)

Bonus thought:  If Dirk is  serious about marketing himself, he can look no further than Mavs owner Mark Cuban. Last week I shared my thoughts on on this with Bloomberg TV.

Check out our Twitter-style bios and follow our team on Twitter.
