DWTS

DWTS: Twitter Breakdown

As we hit the halfway point in the DWTS season, it’s a good time to look at the impact of the show on contestants' social media, which continues the greater discussion of these celebrities' brand-friendliness, something we discussed before dancing even began.

    1.  DWTS contestants have collectively added an impressive 765,000+ followers
    2. @RobKardashian garnered the largest increase, adding 422,000+ followers since his dancing debut, predictably aided by support from his Twitter-dominating sisters Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney
    3. The largest percentage increases, on the other hand, came from Iraq war veteran and motivational speaker @KnowJR (850%+), with Cher-child @ChazBono (650%+) and singer/actress @ChynnaPhillips (500%+) close behind.
    4.  The smallest increase in followers came unsurprisingly from Italian Elisabetta Canalis, as her Twitter handle is not verified and she was voted off on the second show

We expect the contestants that continue to make it through the competition will continue to gain more Twitter followers, which gives them a new-found edge to brands looking to hire talent.  Followers aren’t a tell-all measurement, however, as social media value also comes from a user's level of engagement and message quality.  But if Tweeting celebs understand the medium, utilize it, and engage fans, they can seek more lucrative deals and strengthen subsequent campaigns.

And, of course, Twitter is only one piece of the puzzle. We’ve said it before,  but the sheer number of eyeballs watching (400% more than Good Morning America for ABC) gives DWTS contestants a platform to develop and leverage. Past contestants successes include:  Ralph Macchio (State Farm campaign, Dove Ice Cream),  Emmit Smith (Just for Men, Hershey’s, National Pork Board), Apolo Ohno (Got Milk?, Subway), Chelsea Kane (Pedigree).

The Dancing With The Stars platform is already working for some: favorite Ricki Lake will soon be releasing a four-disk set for expectant mothers entitled More Business of Being Born, a follow up to her 2007 release, The Business of Being Born.

Nostalgia in 2011

“Where’s the beef?” used to be a rhetorical question from the early 80s, but with the influx of recent ads hinging on nostalgia of once-lived campaigns, the beef and its subsequent implications are right here, in 2011. (In fact, USA Today also wrote about nostaliga today).

Fast food giant Wendy’s movement to unearth its past “Where’s The Beef” slogan not only dug up a 1980s meme with a new-and-improved TV spot featuring Modern Family actor Reid Ewing, but also followed suit in a line culture that craves the recent-ish past:  Alf sat down for an interview on Good Morning America; VH1 reran Pop-Up video segments once again;  Nick at Night gorges its schedule with sitcoms like Friends, The Nanny, and Home Improvement; Mike Judd’s Beavis and Butthead will giggle back onto airwaves on MTV soon.

ALF vs. Tries To Behave On GMA Interview

What does this mean in the sponsorship space?  For starters, The Muppets, who will release a movie this November, appear in a bevy of partnerships with brands like Wonderful Pistachio, MAC, and WME.  The original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, turned his Dancing With The Stars stint into deals with Dove and State Farm.   Tim Allen, once of Home Improvement, has worked with Pure Michigan travel, Campbell’s Soup, and Chevrolet, and is seen in a new half-hour comedy on ABC entitled Last Man Standing.  Even the NFL caught on, featuring old-school, throw-back Jerseys to relive the past, for better or for worse.

As the nostalgia wave continues at full force, we’ll see more and more celebrities from our past pop up in programs and potentially, revive their careers.

Dancing With the Stars: Season 12 Marketing Odds

We say this each season, and each season it proves to be true - ABC's Dancing With the Stars (DWTS) elevates and rebuilds the marketability of its contestants better than any reality show on television. Hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke announced the Season 12 cast last night and wow, we were surprised at the lack of nationally-known stars. This season will quickly prove if the success is based on the show format vs. the celebrities competing on DWTS. Having surpassed American Idol in the ratings last season, can DWTS live up to its past potential with its recently announced cast? (We don't think so.)

Every season, we see several cast members who become relevant once again in the mass marketing world. We did a guest post for Adfreak on our marketing predictions for this season - click here to read.

And, here is our full look at DWTS Marketing Odds (and Potential):

REAL MARKETING POTENTIAL:

  1. Kendra Wilkinson: The reality star has previously endorsed many brands including her latest deal with Ab Cuts, and is perhaps the most mediable of all this season's cast. In addition to DWTS, she continues to star on her hit E! series Kendraand is active in the social media space, making her media-friendly and relevant for campaigns, and best positioned to capitalize on Twitter-focused campaigns. While she does not fit the conventional 'mom' role, if she last long enough on the show, it will soften her risqué Playboy history even more. We can see Wilkinson pairing with a mom/focused campaign as she continues to grow her family, and also product integration deals on her E! series.
  2. Sugar Ray Leonard: This retired boxer was a fierce competitor and we expect that to carry over on DWTS. Olympians have fared well on the show, including wins by Kristi Yamaguchi, Apolo Ohno and Shawn Johnson. Last seen on TV as the host of NBC's The Contender, Leonard has since developed his public speaking talents. DWTS success would give him more material to add to his already impressive resume of getting to the top. In addition, a DWTS win would further leverage his Olympic identity for hospitality opportunities, which is important for the upcoming London Games. If he would have waited to participate in the show in spring 2012, just months before the Olympics, marketing interest in him would have been even greater.
  3. Ralph Macchio:Best known as the original "Karate Kid," Macchio could be the marketing dark horse with success on the dance floor. With a few guest appearances on network television, and a funnyordie.com videoappearance from last year, Macchio has much to gain. If he can manage to stay in the public eye, he could launch himself back into relevancy - and with that come film/TV roles and endorsements. If he still has the same quick feet from his Karate Kiddays, Macchio could come out on top in more ways than one.
  4. Petra Nemcova: Like many supermodels before her, Nemcova's career took off when she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 2004. But, it wasn't until after she survived the devastating Thailand tsunami later that year that she gained worldwide recognition. Recently recognized for her charitable efforts, we think she'll use the DWTS platform to raise awareness for non-profit campaigns, including her global charity Happy Hearts Fund, vs. brand endorsements.
  5. Hines Ward:The almost Super Bowl champion joins the previous lineup of NFL-ers turned chasse-ers (including winner Emmitt Smith, Jason Taylor, Jerry Rice, Chad Ochocino, and Kurt Warner) in this predictable DWTS move. Not only do professional athletes tend to fend well on the dance floor, but football players with charming personalities fend well with fans and brands. His work off the field on the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islandersmakes Ward an interesting option for brands targeting a socially-conscious demographic.
  6. Chris Jericho: WWW ratings have grown throughout the beginning of 2011, and the cult following can only help Jericho and his stint on the show - that is if his fans cross-over. We expect to see Jericho use DWTS as a platform to push his current projects including his book Undisputed, and as a platform to springboard into entertainment - beyond WWE. Coming off as one of the more exciting personalities during the announcement, we think America (and brands) may embrace Jericho.

MARKETING WILD CARD:

  1. Kirstie Alley: In recent years, Alley has mainly been in the news for criticism of her weight, previous endorsement deal with Jenny Craig, and the launch of her own organic weight loss program Organic Liaison. Many past contestants  have danced away the pounds, and so could be the case for Alley. Following her run on the show, and how long she keeps dancing, Alley could use the publicity surrounding her potential weight loss, to once again serve as a credible spokesperson for a healthy living program, or to promote Organic Liaison.  It will come down to her performance and equally importantly, how she's act ON CAMERA.
  2.  Wendy Williams: The outspoken radio star-turned-TV talk show host-turned dancer has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind and causing a little controversy. One of this year's wild cards has previously partnered with Alize and Nivea. People - and brands - will likely either love her or hate her. And, like with Alley it will come down to her behavior on camera.

Kirstie Alley

MARKETING UPSIDE? DON'T THINK SO:

  1. Chelsea Kane: We’ve seen several Disneystars trade in their mouse ears for dance shoes including last season’s runner-up Kyle Massey, Season 7 contestant Cody Linley, Season 5 contestant Sabrina Bryan, and Season 3 contestant Monique Coleman. While these younger stars are well-received while on the show, none have seen deals and future projects roll in like some of the elder contestants. This is a huge break for her, and should she be able to break the mold, would be a great fit for a fun girl-focused beauty or fashion campaign.
  2. Romeo Miller: Following in his dad’s footsteps (Master P who was arguably the worst DWTS contestant in series history appeared on Season 2) once again – first in music, now in dance - Romeo has the potential to be a breakout star having spent most of his life performing. His career the USC Trojan basketball team was cut short due to a shoulder injury. And, his success both on and off the dance floor, will depend if he can handle the rigorous training. If he can survive the DWTS injury curse, Lil’ Romeo would be a natural fit for young-male centric campaign.
  3. Mike Catherwood: One of the lesser known contestants, Catherwood may have the most to gain from a successful run on the show. However, that will depend on how long his stint actually lasts. The Loveline co-host and former personal trainer, who often uses the radio show to educate listeners on the subject of substance abuse, could be seen as a credible voice to brands for healthy/lifestyle campaigns.

Bo Does DWTS?

I feel ESPN & ABC, sister stations, missed a real opportunity to publicize Bo Jackson in advance of tonight's BCS National Championship Game and then immediately following, announce him as a contestant on DWTS. This year is the 25th Anniversary of Bo's Heisman Trophy Award and his alma mater (Auburn) is the number #1 ranked school in the Country. Everyone remembers Bo from his Nike "Bo Does" commercials and it would have been very easy for ESPN to bring him back to relevancy now.

I touch on Bo, the future marketing of Cam Newton and more in this Sporting News radio interview I did with Scott Jackson. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

First Annual Celeb Publicist of the Year

In our inaugural Celebrity Publicist of the Year Award, we are giving it to two deserving candidates and neither of them are people, yet brands. The winners are Snickers and Dancing with the Stars.

DWTS casting department has done miracles for dozens of celebrities. Nicole Scherzinger is a judge on the Singing Bee and rumored to be part of X Factor. Emmitt Smith is the face of Just for Men and Tequila Herradura. Brooke Burke has turned in fame into a plentora of deals within Modern Mom and she is now the co-host of DWTS. Mario Lopez is the man on Extra TV. Jennie Garth recently had partnerships with Hidden Valley Ranch and AAO. Apolo Ohno now joins the Mannings, Williams sisters and Donald Trump in Oreo TV advertisements. And the list goes on and on for celebrities... Shawn Johnson, Gilles Marini, Erin Andrews, Kurt Warner, Lisa Rinna, Florence Henderson, Jerry Rice, Marie Osmond, Melissa Joan Hart, Niecy Nash, Chad Ochochinco and more.

If you want to pick one name, Deena Katz has been DWTS senior talent producer since its inception.

And we would be remiss if we didn't give Snickers an award for what they did for Betty White's career. Within weeks of the Super Bowl advertisement (above), White hosted NBC's Saturday Night Live (of which she won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series). She appeared in TV primetime on both Community and Hot in Cleveland and this past week was just named Associated Press Entertainer of the Year. It's no surprise that the USDA Forest Service along with Smokey Bear made actress Betty White a honorary forest ranger, fulfilling her lifelong dream.
