-Do Something Awards: We took a look at this year’s celebrity nominees and recognized Kathy Griffin’s efforts to help victims of domestic abuse, Lady Gaga’s well-known battle for LGBT rights and equality and Kim Kardashian’s use of Twitter to raise money for Japan relief. Tune in to VH1 August 18th to find out who takes home the golden shoe.
-Variety Sport Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles. I was very fortunate to be part of a panel on building an athletes brand. It lead to very interesting conversation. Thanks to all who were there.
-The ESPY Awards took place Wednesday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Some of our favorite winners were: Dirk Nowitzki for Best NBA Player, Best Male Athlete and Best Team, Lindsey Vonn for Best Female Athlete, Jimmer Fredette for Best College Athlete, and last minute entry Abby Wambach for Best Play.
-The stars of the epic Harry Potter films made their way to the American market this week for the New York premiere of the final installment of the series, The Deathly Hallows Part 2. The quirky Zooey Deschannel will also be hitting up talk shows to discuss her acting and music career. She recently composed the final song for the new Winnie the Pooh film.
Looking Forward
In the sports world, we'll be cheering on the US Women's Team to victory over Japan in the 2011 Women's World Cup. From a marketing standpoint, we'll be watching closely to gauge the potential marketing futures of Hope Solo, Abby Wambach and co.
