Muppets Take On Advertising

Muppets haven’t taken on Manhattan or any other medium since 2005, when ABC released A Muppets Wizard of Oz, a made-for-TV movie with the gang, co-starring Ashanti.  Since then, the puppeted icons have been relatively dormant, until recently, as Jim Henson Company and Disney amp up to release The Muppets starring and written by I Love You Man and How I Met Your Mother funny-guy, Jason Segel.

With the November release of The Muppets sneaking up, the franchise has smartly and gradually reintroduced itself to mass audiences. Starting months ago, Disney’s theatrical marketing department released several parody teasers, most notably “The Pig With the Froggy Tattoo,” a revamp of much-talked-about The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trailer.

Crossing industries a bit, the Muppet team collaborated with several musical artists like Weezer, Matt Nathanson, and the Fray for The Green  Album, released in late August.  The official website for the record featured an embedded movie trailer, link to the Facebook fansite, and store to buy Muppet merchandise.

Muppet stars themselves have bopped into the advertising world as well: Kermit the Frog appeared in an ad for Wonderful Pistachio and Miss Piggy will not only be the new face of M.A.C, but also is featured in the movie wearing original twelve original costumes by American designer Zac Posen, and custom shoes created by Christian Louboutin.

Most recently, Modern Family featured a lot of talk about the Muppet movie, which publicists have said was solely a creative decision, despite Disney’s control over both ABC and the release of The Muppet Movie.  (Not too long ago, Modern Family also denied rumor that their iPhone episode was an excuse of Apple product placement, though both parties denied that assumption completely.)

On Halloween night, the persistent puppets will host WWE’s RAW and step into the ring with wrestling A-listers, in a unorthodox but demographic-widening publicity stunt.

A decade since their last theatrical release, the Muppets have changed their game, positioning themselves to reinstate a solid franchise, with plenty of time before their November 23rd release date to continue the smart, and sometimes unexpected promotions.

What do you think of the Muppets comeback?
